Ian Oughtred design, Grey Seal: 22′ 2″ LOA x 7′ 9″ beam, 2′ 3″ draft, 3,900 pound displacement, centerboard, clinker built, gunter-rigged double-ended. See WoodenBoat magazine No 128-130; plan #91. Epoxy bonded, 1/2″ marine plywood hull, epoxy laminated ash frames and sheer clamp. Deck beams and interior framing are of clear yellow cedar. Hull and deck are fiberglassed.
Built between 2005 and 2009. Except while cruising the waters of the Discovery Islands near Vancouver Island, “Five Summers” has lived winters on its trailer, completely dry in its boat shed.
The boat is fully rigged with jib and main sail by Hasse and Company Port Townsend Sails. The running and standing rigging are complete with classic looking Tufnol blocks. Two-stroke, 2-cyl 12-hp auxiliary engine built by Dolphin Engines in Bodmin, Cornwall, England with reverse transmission, intercooler, and Campbell Sailer 9″ propeller. Engine and shaft log with dripless seal were professionally installed. Wife said “Your next boat will have a head,” causing the cabin to be raised 4″.
The boat is a joy to sail, stable and safe. $25,000.
Boat is in its shed at Heriot Bay, Quadra Island, BC; a ten-minute ferry ride from Campbell River on Vancouver Island, easily hauled to your Vancouver Island location. On Quadra to inspect the boat, contact Derek Jean 250-285-2571.
