1955, 27' Shepherd Commuter Convertible

This is a gorgeous boat that has been professionally restored to “show condition”. No expense was spared in the total restoration of this boat. Boat is powered by twin Chrysler Crown engines, 135-hp each, with about 50 hours of use since rebuild. Boat comes with convertible top, full mooring cover, and roadworthy tandem axle trailer.

“Nina” is 30′ on deck, 42′ overall, 10′ beam, and 4′ draft. Cedar on oak with teak, mahogany. Pitch pine, Cyprus through out. All bronze, full lead keel. Rigged as late 1700’s sloop. Fided top mast, gaff main, jib, staysail. All Tanbark.

Top mast can be rigged for topsail. All standing, and running rigging is three-strand “New England Ropes” polyester brand.

New in 2013. Mast and spars are Sitka spruce. 16-hp Beta Marine diesel, installed 2012, brand new,13 hours total time. PSS shaft seal. Fuel capacity 45 gallons total. Water 50 gallons. Can be single handed, a heavy good seaboat. Built by Tom Russell of Russell Marine in Morehead City, NC. Commissioned 1979.

“Euphrates” is a beautiful, 1949 Matthews classic wooden motoryacht. She is fresh off a loving, 10-year restoration. The work performed was absolutely first-class. The result is stunning. Teak and mahogany abound. She has all new wiring, appliances, and plumbing. She was re-powered. The foredeck, pilothouse roof, and bottom were professionally refinished from bare wood. The transom was completely rebuilt. All bright work, chrome, brass, or bronze was buffed, polished, replaced or re-chromed. Radar has been installed. “Euphrates” is in fabulous condition, located in Newport Beach, CA. She is for sale for $140,000. A 50/50 partnership would be considered for a well qualified buyer.

Howard Hughes Sportster Dinghy

Howard Hughes Sportster Dinghy for sale: $9,500.

This is one of the dinghies made from the materials when the “Spruce Goose” production was on hold by the government. It is a Hughes Sportster made by Howard Hughes at the time he was experimenting with wood and epoxy in his great quest to build an airplane out of wood. The story goes that, at a time when the contract for the “Spruce Goose” was being held up by the government, he put his crew to work building little boats, and some office furniture! He succeeded in building, and flying the gigantic “Spruce Goose,” which is now in the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. Nestled at its base is a little Sportster.

My best information on the production of this dinghy is that it was hot-molded, using sheets of birch laminate, rather than spruce — and resorcinol.

It is not clear how many of these little boats were made but it is widely believed that there were very few still in existence. This one is in great condition, and would make a wonderful addition to any boat enthusiast’s collection.
